Month: December / January

Vaikuntha Ekadashi

The most sacred Ekadashi of the year

When: Eleventh lunar day of the bright fortnight in the month of Margashirsha — typically December or January.

Significance

  • Tradition holds that the gates of Vaikuntha — Lord Vishnu's eternal abode — open on this day.
  • In temples following the Tirumala tradition, devotees pass through the symbolic Vaikuntha Dwaram (the gateway to Vaikuntha) early in the morning.
  • Considered the most spiritually fruitful day of the year for fasting, scriptural study, and devotion to Vishnu.

Observances

  • Strict fast from sunrise on the day before (Dashami) until sunrise on Dwadashi (the following day) — traditionally, even water is restricted.
  • Many devotees stay awake through the night in continuous remembrance, song, and prayer.
  • Recitation of the Vishnu Sahasranamam, Bhagavad Gita, and the Tiruppavai is especially auspicious.
  • Pilgrimage to a Vishnu temple — especially to walk through the Vaikuntha Dwaram — is the central observance for many.

Home worship steps

  1. 1Begin the fast with a sankalpa — a quiet vow — at sunrise on Dashami evening.
  2. 2Set aside time for chanting and study throughout the day; the Vishnu Sahasranamam is the traditional recitation.
  3. 3Light a ghee lamp before the Lord's image and keep it burning through the night if possible.
  4. 4In the early hours of Ekadashi, offer arghya (water) and fresh tulasi leaves.
  5. 5Break the fast at the prescribed Dwadashi parana time the next morning, ideally with simple, sattvic food.
