Introduction to Japa Meditation
Published on
Japa is the meditative repetition of a mantra, often counted on a string of beads. It is one of the simplest and most accessible spiritual practices.
This guide explains how to begin japa at home.
The mala
A japa mala typically has 108 beads plus a larger "meru" bead that marks the start and end. The beads are moved one at a time with each repetition.
Forms of japa
Japa can be spoken aloud, whispered, or done silently in the mind. Mental japa is considered the most subtle and powerful.
Beginning a practice
Choose a simple mantra, sit comfortably at a regular time, and begin with a single round of the mala. Consistency matters more than length.
